7th Avenue Historic District

 

For those inspired by the beauty and detail of Craftsman architecture, nothing in Denver compares to this home in prestigious 7th Avenue Historic District.

 

The owners’ vision was to recreate an authentic and complete restoration of a Denver four square by capturing the simplicity and grace of the Arts and Crafts era. Incorporating modern luxuries and working with the Denver Landmark Commission, the architect and Iris Building Group, the project spanned nearly two and half years of planning and execution of this comprehensive historic renovation. 

 

The original 1908 four square required extensive renovation and expansion, but offered the ideal location and the bones the owners were seeking. The home has been transformed into a genuine example of high Craftsman style. It was completely gutted, re-engineered and designed with attention to every detail. The reconstruction incorporates many of the elements of Craftsman architecture, including a large reconstructed covered porch, the use of exceptionally fine mill work, period hardware and lighting fixtures, attention to scale, five indoor fireplaces incorporating artisan hand painted tile surrounds and an expansive gourmet kitchen that is the heart of the home. The design includes much of what would have been used in the most beautiful Craftsman homes, including box beam ceilings, colonnades, custom full inset built ins, interior corbels, hand cut staircase railings, leaded art glass, mahogany wood floor inserts and Bradbury & Bradbury art wall treatments.

 

The Craftsman era in Denver architecture

 

The Craftsman era in Denver architecture (1890s-1920s) was inspired by the work of two architects, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, who practiced in California from 1893 to 1914. Based on the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement in England, led by William Morris and the English Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, the Craftsman movement advocated a return to handcrafted arts. Arts and Crafts and Craftsman style incorporated lifestyle philosophy, architecture, interior design, landscape, applied arts and decorative arts.

 

The California homes designed by Greene & Greene were spacious, expensive and appointed with a timeless quality that represents some of the finest examples of residential architecture in the United States. With amazing attention to detail and tasteful use of wood, tile, stone and architectural features, the owners of 675 Humboldt have succeeded in capturing the essence of what Greene & Greene created in their American Arts and Crafts masterpieces.

 

The renovation included:

 

·         All of the original windows were removed, rebuilt and replaced by Lyons Historic Windows

·         The exterior corbels were repaired and new ones custom fabricated

·         New leaded glass designs were added

·         Bay windows in the library and dining room were made operational into single sash hung windows

·         Lighting and plumbing fixtures specific to the early 1900’s style were carefully selected

·         An Old World library with wall to wall quarter sawn white oak built in bookshelves and ceiling was made a focal point of the entry

·         Period tile surrounds were added to the five indoor fireplaces

·         White quarter sawn oak was used extensively in the comprehensive trim and millwork replacement

·         New 3 1/2 inch quarter sawn and rift oak floors were installed throughout

 

The home was brought to the highest contemporary standards of construction:

 

·         A stunning William Ohs chef’s kitchen with Wolf and Subzero appliances and full inset cabinets was added, including a Carrera marble island and two pantries. The kitchen was featured in the Kitchens edition of Colorado Homes & Lifestyles magazine

·         Each of the four large bedrooms features an en suite bath with period tile, marble floors, pedestal sinks, claw foot tubs and Arts + Crafts hardware

·         The luxurious master bedroom suite has a large walk in closet and en suite Carrera marble bath with a soaking tub and steam shower

·         The third floor study features a full en suite bath, roof deck and Marquis hot tub with mountain views, and could be easily converted to a fifth bedroom

·         The lower level includes a large gym with adjoining steam shower and sauna, a gorgeous custom 1500 bottle premium redwood wine cellar, a music room and an oversized laundry

·         An inviting outside kitchen welcomes guests with a large patio and gas fireplace

·         Custom wrought iron fence and gate were added

·         All of the electrical, plumbing, HVAC, sewer lines, water lines and gas lines were completely replaced

·         All utilities were relocated from aerial to underground

·         Five direct vent fireplaces inside and one outside fireplace were installed 

·         Internal wiring was added for top of the line whole house sound system, security and internet

·         Upgrades include two 75 gallon high efficiency hot water heaters and two new high efficiency air conditioning units
